Madison Aubey

PhD Candidate

Maddy Aubey (she/her) is a PhD student studying the archaeology of the African Diaspora. Her dissertation research focuses on the community of Africatown Alabama. Using household and Black feminist archaeology methods she hopes to better understand how the founders of Africatown preserved their West African cultural knowledge and practices while also engaging with the consumer networks of the American South. Theoretically, her work engages with notions of Habitus, diaspora studies, sovereignty studies and consumer practices. She has done fieldwork in Kalamata, Greece, Saclo, Benin, and Fort Mosé in Florida.
